sight words

Sight words, also referred to as Dolch Words, occur with high frequency in written material. While some of these words can be sounded out (e.g., did, can, red), many cannot (e.g., could, said, was). Sight words must be recognized quickly by the reader (i.e., with automaticity). Automaticity at the word level is important for fluency at the passage level. Reading fluently is essential for reading comprehension.
