A unique feature of DailyCues allows members to select their preferred notation in their profile. Examples linked to the cued English dictionary display in the notation prefered notation (e.g., click this word, examples). There are currently three options for notation: International Phonetic Alphabet (e.g., /lɑɪˈk ðɪˈs/), Dictionary Notation (e.g., /līˈk t͟hĭs/), and Phonemic Notation (e.g., /lieˈk tHis/).
By using some special code, one can embed pronunciation examples that adapt and display according to each members preferred notation. The following example /nnnnnnnnnoʊōohoʊōohoʊōohttttttttteɪāayeɪāayeɪāayˈˈˈˈˈˈˈˈˈʃshshʃshshʃshshəəəəəəəəənnnnnnnnn/ displays in your preferred notation. Different members will see that example displayed differently according to their preference.
Additionally, by placing your cursor over any one phoneme, several examples that use that phoneme appear in a small help box.
If one simply types a phoneme in slashes (e.g., /ɚ/), it is static. It will not adjust to the individual members preferences. It may not even be recognizable to some members. This can cause inconsistencies in the site. However, one can insert adaptive phonemes as a single phoneme (e.g., /ʃshshʃshshʃshsh/) or a whole word (e.g., /wwwwwwwwwɚûrurɚûrurɚûrurˈˈˈˈˈˈˈˈˈddddddddd/) which will conform to the member's preferences.
While it might seem a little tricky at first, it is just a few extra symbols and a little care to select the right IPA symbol. To save you time, the symbols are displayed below to cut and paste.
